Chitradurga, (D.14): Bharatiya Janata Party candidate K.S. Naveen has won the elections to the Legislative Council from Local Bodies constituency with first-preference votes. The results were announced on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Kavitha S. Mannikeri said that Naveen secured 2,629 first-preference votes and defeated his nearest rival, Somashekhar B. of the Congress by a margin of 358 votes.
Out of the 5,060 votes cast, 144 were rejected thus leaving 4,916 valid votes. A candidate has to secure 50% plus one vote to be victorious, which translates into 2,459 votes. However, Naveen secured 2,629 votes and hence there was no need to count the second-preference votes, the DC said.
The polling was held on December 10 and the votes were counted at the new building of the Government Science College in Chitradurga on Tuesday. The counting began in the presence of the election observer Naveen Raj Singh at 8 in the morning.
